NPWS Discovery Program Spring 07

Our Mission: Landholders individually and collectively improving the ecological condition, connection and wildlife values of native vegetation remnants by ongoing suppression and removal of exotic species and complementary plantings.

The group consists of about 15 families who are landholders within and immediately adjoining the Eden Valley Estate off Gap Road, Alstonville. Chilcotts Creek is the southern boundary of the group and Gap Road the eastern boundary though the group welcomes membership from all adjoining and nearby landholders. The group has been operating for 6 years commencing with a formation meeting in July 2001.

One of the early projects of the group was the establishment of a demonstration site and planting adjacent to Dillons Lane. The roadside area was cleared of weeds such as croften weed and lantana, protection fencing was installed (swamp wallabies enjoy the area as well as young plantings) and around 100 rainforest trees were planted. The site has become the focus of periodic working bees.

UPCOMING EVENTS

See September 07 newsletter and the National Parks and Wildlife Services Discovery Program for the spring school holidays (links at top of page)

The group has participated in National Tree Day and maintains the roadside into the estate by mowing and brush-cutting. Social activities include bonfire nights, family creek walks and a family Christmas Party.

Collectively the group has planted over 3000 native plants with the assistance of a Federal Government Envirofund Grant. These plantings have been aimed at linking vegetation remnants to assist wildlife movement and improve the local creek environments. Maintenance of these plantings is now a considerable focus of the effort of members. Some fencing of local waterways has been undertaken to reduce the pressure of cattle on the creek and riparian environment.

Focus strategies of the group include:
# the ongoing removal and management of camphor laurel,
# the ongoing control and suppression of noxious and environmental weeds,
# active bush and rainforest regeneration,
# informing and educating our community about the unique and special area in which we live.
