 Evans Head Eco Warrior Landcare Group

The EcoWarriors are a voluntary group of like minded students and supportive staff from Evans River K-12 School. Their common interest is making their school and local community aware of environmental issues and working towards creating a cleaner, healthier and happier community. We coordinated with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and our local council (Richmond Valley) in organizing Evans Head’s involvement in the Humpback Icon Project. This involved our community adopting a humpback whale. Our community wholeheartedly supported this project and Evans Head Badjalang Elder named our whale Jumigum (salt water). This project went on to become part of the successful campaign to halt the killing of humpback whales in 2007. |
More recently the EcoWarriors have implemented a recycling paper/cardboard system into the school which is proving to be very successful.
We are always looking for ways to help our community and at the same time improve the environment. In our agricultural plot staff and students have been collecting native tree seeds and propagating them. This has been very fruitful and we have quite a collection of saplings ready to plant out.
We are aware of many areas of Evans Head that could be improved, by clearing invasive plants and using our saplings. However we felt we did not have enough knowledge how to instigate this and felt that by joining Richmond Landcare we could learn how to bring about our ideas.We have been welcomed to the association and are anxious to learn all we can from other members; to not only improve Evans Head but everyone’s environment.
