Myrtle rust (pictured right) has now been confirmed on 140 properties from the mid south coast to the north coast of NSW. More than 1100 properties, including residential, bushland and roadside verges have been inspected. There are 29 known susceptible host species and this number is expected to rise. The rust has been confirmed in 25 bushland sites and adjoining residential properties with several large tracts of bushland infected on the Central Coast.
Based on the current knowledge and distribution of the disease, the Myrtle rust National Management Group has agreed that it is not technically feasible to eradicate the disease. A National Myrtle Rust Coordination Group representing industry, government and non-government stakeholders, has been established to oversee ongoing actions aimed at minimising the impact of Myrtle rust on the environment, industry, and the community.
Industry and Investment NSW (I&I NSW) is continuing to undertake actions where possible aimed at slowing the spread of this disease in NSW including management of new detections on a risk basis under agreed emergency management protocols. More information on the I & I NSW website.
