Management committee

Hedy Bryant
Chairperson

Since moving to the Northern Rivers in 2019, Hedy has been volunteering on the dunes with Ballina Coastcare. She is currently the Chair of Richmond Landcare Inc. Being connected to grassroots action and the natural environment is central to her sense of purpose and place.
Hedy is semi-retired and keeps her hand in lecturing in contemporary leadership and contributing to research into curriculum development and disaster resilience. She has a diverse background with formative experiences working in natural resource management, vertebrate pest management, exotic disease preparedness, catchment management and Landcare in the 1980s and 1990s; coordinating the establishment of the Australian Wildlife Health Network in 2002.
Her favourite plant is the grevillea because of its attraction to birds, while on the dunes it’s the coastal banksia – Banksia integrifolia. Hedy's other passion is bushwalking.

Andrew Playford
Vice-Chairperson

Alan Larsen
Treasurer

Alan Larsen is retired and lives at Wollongbar with his wife Helen. He grew up on an orchard/market garden in Bay of Plenty, NZ. He has four children and three grandchildren.
Alan has had a varied career working initially as a forester in Rotorua NZ, after completing a Bachelor of Forestry Science at Canterbury University. Alan worked in the NZ forestry sector as a forest manager and consultant. He travelled widely throughout NZ and Australia and on international consulting assignments for Asian Development Bank, UNDP, Commonwealth Secretariat, and NZ Foreign Affairs. Later in his career he worked in international marketing for NZ forestry corporations, again travelling widely internationally.
Later Alan worked in business banking in Auckland, before shifting to Rockhampton Queensland and setting up accounting and financial planning businesses in Rockhampton and Gladstone.
Alan developed a strong social, spiritual, and environmental focus throughout his career, and into retirement phase. He has led several environmental campaigns in NZ and Rockhampton. He has been a board member for Anglicare Central Queensland, Mission to Seafarers (Gladstone), and the Tanyalla Community Center. Throughout his time in Rockhampton Alan sat on the Anglican Diocese Bishop in Council. After retiring in 2000, Alan and his wife shifted to Northern Rivers. He attends the Anglican Church in Alstonville, and led the project to set up community gardens at the Church. He has been recruited to the Committees of Ballina for Refugees, and Richmond Landcare. He is a keen gardener and enjoys contributing to community projects.

Alana Bryant
Secretary

Alana moved to the Northern Rivers in 2021 and has been a member of Whian Whian Landcare for the last few years. She is most interested in learning about and planting local rainforest trees and plants, and landslip remeditation, especially after the 2022 floods in Lismore.

Alana's background is in education, as an ex-primary school teacher and English language teacher, and she currently works at Southern Cross University supporting students in their academic literacy across a variety of disciplines. However, she is most happy when outside getting her hands dirty, and loves being able to balance knowledge work with the more hands-on approach of Landcare.

As RLI Secretary, she contributes behind-the-scenes to make sure communications, committee meetings, and other organisational needs keep ticking along smoothly.

Big Rob
Public Officer

Big Rob represents Lismore Lake Incorporated Landcare, which was established in 2021 to help progress the regeneration of the Lismore Lake Precinct as a bird sanctuary and as an accessible and inclusive community recreation space alongside the Wilsons River in South Lismore.
Big Rob is a lawyer, a councillor at Lismore City Council, and an active member of Lismore City Council's Flood Risk Management Committee amongst many other things. Passionate about flood mitigation, Big Rob wants to see various options implemented to help reduce the impact of flooding in the region. Nature-based solutions will compliment various other options to mitigate flooding, while also assisting with geomorphic and riparian condition, aquatic macroinvertebrates, water quality, and overall river health.

Vanessa Ekins
Committee Member

When I joined Wilsons River Landcare in 1999, I met my Lismore family and started learning about lowland subtropical rainforest species and the significance of our floodplains. With decades of experience working to restore riverbanks and big scrub remnants from Tweed to Coffs Harbour, I feel like I belong to this place. I am very happy to be part of the RLI team.

Lydia Blocksidge
Local Landcare Coordinator

Lydia is the Local Landcare Coordinator at Richmond Landcare Inc. Lydia’s background is in Regenerative Agriculture, Agroecology, and Horticulture. For the past ten years Lydia has worked across a diverse range of projects and sites, implementing ecologically sensitive food production and land regeneration.
Lydia is passionate about engaging the community in the natural environment and sharing all that she’s learnt working with nature, our greatest teacher. Working with Landcare allows Lydia to connect, teach, learn, share and care for the land and waters around us alongside other passionate and dedicated individuals. This is the purpose driven work Lydia loves most.

Louissa Rogers
Nature-Based Solutions Project Manager

Louissa Rogers has built a strong career as an environmental scientist, with a focus on natural resource management, for over two decades. Her experience working closely with communities and Traditional Owners has informed her understanding of place and enabled the integration of local values, knowledge, and experience into her projects. She brings this collaborative approach to her role as Project Manager for Richmond Landcare Inc.'s "Nature-based Solutions: Building Flood Resilience in the Lismore Catchment" project.
Louissa is committed to implementing solutions that are both environmentally effective and rooted in the local context. Working with RLI provides her with access to decades of knowledge from Land-carers who have worked in the region for many years, ensuring the project's success at the grass-roots level. Which makes her very happy. 🙂

Rebecah Watsford
Projects Administration Manager

Rebecah is the Projects Administration Manager at Richmond Landcare. Rebecah started working with Richmond Landcare in early 2024, and has previous experience working in the health, community, government and not-for-profit sectors. Rebecah has worked in office management, finance, as an executive assistant and in project support roles.
Rebecah is currently studying a Bachelor of Health Sciences, majoring in Health, Nature and Sustainability.
Working for Landcare is a dream come true for Rebecah as she previously worked with the Hon. Joan Kirner, who along with Heather Mitchell, first launched the Landcare movement in Victoria in 1986. Joan was an inspirational mentor leading by example with her tireless work in the community.

As a recent new resident of the Northern Rivers region, the most enjoyable and surprising benefit of working and volunteering with Landcare has been the deepening of social connections and relationships within the community. Rebecah also works part time with North Coast Regional Landcare Network as the Executive Support Officer.

Rebecah’s favourite tree is the majestic Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) from the Dandenong Ranges region in Victoria, where she grew up.

Ivy Young
Project Officer

Growing up in the Bega Valley on rural land, Ivy Young has called the Northern Rivers home since moving here to study a Bachelor of Naturopathy in 1998. She lives in the hills near The Channon with her husband and two sons and has been involved in various community organisations over the years. Her ideal day is spent in the garden, or regenerating the weedy slopes surrounding her home, then heading to the creek for a swim with home-grown fruit to munch.

Ivy is delighted to be working with Richmond Landcare, delivering projects that support people gaining knowledge, skills and support that help us better care-take the land we live upon, and improving the resilience of our landscapes to the impacts of natural disasters.

Vanessa Eden
Projects Officer

I am a beef farmer and Science teacher. I have two roles at RLI. One is to facilitate workshops that forge cultural connections, and the other is to deliver tree planting and education workshops for school kids on how to care for the catchment.
On my beef farm, I have a small patch of eucalyptus and forest oak on a ridgeline. We are returning the use of fire to remove the rainforest midstory which will maintain the native grasses and diversity on the forest floor. This will keep the pathway clear so that koalas can move from tree to tree.
I want to learn more about Indigenous land management and culture. I want to connect to country and am most happy when in nature and helping other people to connect to nature.
